Creating sustainable business growth
Growing your business is probably something you've spent a lot of time thinking about. After all, you have big plans and big dreams and a big idea of what this business is going to be.
But growing your business in a way that is sustainable can be tricky. Trust me, I have made some mistakes along the way and I don't want you to make those same mistakes.
In this article, we're going to talk about how you can grow your business in a way that is manageable and isn’t going to spiral out of control!
(Of course, one way to grow your business is to make sure that you're making smart marketing decisions - one of the key areas that we cover in my CEO's Mastering TikTok program.)
Set clear boundaries
I get it, you want your clients to be absolutely raving fans of you and so you want to offer them the world on a silver platter. But here's the thing: you can't do everything for everyone and you need to set some boundaries.
Trying to be everything to everyone is buying a one-way ticket to burnout. Without clear boundaries, you end up setting an expectation that you can't possibly meet and that's when people start to get disappointed.
So what do clear boundaries look like?
It can be as simple as not responding to every email right away. I was guilty of this when I started out, but the fact was that my clients were not expecting me to reply late at night or on the weekend. So why was I taking time away from my family to do that?
It also means being clear about what you are going to do. Scope creep can easily happen when you will do just one more thing...and one more thing...and one more thing...until you're doing ten times the work you originally agreed to.
If you want to avoid scope creep, be very specific in your agreements with clients. Set clear expectations from the beginning and don't add anything unless they are willing to pay for it.
Stay focused when it comes to your offerings
Yes, having multiple streams of revenue is smart.
However, having so many different offers and launches happening until you're not able to deliver on any of them...not so smart.
Don't let your ambition get in the way of your deliverables...it's much better to be excellent at one thing than mediocre at many.
So what does this look like?
It means that when you're growing your business, you need to focus on one thing at a time. If you're launching a new program, don't also try and release a new product...work on one thing until it's done and then move onto the next.
I fell into this trap. In fact, a while ago I thought that I was invincible. I booked a client, and was feeling cocky and arrogant about it...
...that is until my client fired me. My deliverables slipped and it had me knocked off my pedestal eating humble pie. I never saw it coming because I thought that I could do it all and do it all well.
Learned that lesson.
Let it go
You're good at what you do and you've built a great business but that doesn't mean you're good at everything.
And that's okay. Because someone else is.
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that it's important to know your strengths and weaknesses. And more importantly, it's important to know when to ask for help.
Trying to wear all the hats at once and learn everything on your own is too much. You'll be exhausted, your performance is going to suffer and it can even affect your relationships with your family.
The best thing that you can do for your business is to focus on what you're good at and outsource or delegate the rest.
My zone of genius is helping businesses connect with their audiences and grow their businesses using TikTok. It's not maintaining my website or doing my own bookkeeping.
So what do I do? I have a team that helps me with all of those things so that I can focus on what I'm good at and deliver the best results for my clients.
The Bottom Line
Growing your business is not about working harder, it's about working smarter. Sustainable business growth comes from making smart decisions, having clear boundaries, and asking for help. By following these three keys, you'll be well on your way to growing a thriving business that will stand the test of time.
